10 simple ways to improve personal productivity

12/12/08

Reaching the peak of your personal productivity is a process that involves dedication, experimentation and time. You may not discover what technique works best for you on the first try, but keep looking and you’ll find success.

The following tips and tricks will help you get started with personal productivity and improve your time management skills.

  • Write everything down. Don’t keep your to-do list bottled up in your mind, write it down and post it in a highly visible place on your desk. Writing everything down will help free your mind, allowing more creativity to flow.
  • Prioritize. Put your to-do list in order, with the most important tasks at the top of the list. Knowing your priorities will help you focus more on what matters and less on what could wait until later.
  • Just do it. If something on your to-do list can be completed within two minutes, do it right then and there. Completing the easiest tasks first will quickly eliminate tasks from your list and make you feel like there’s less on your plate.
  • Be aware. Do your best to focus on one task at a time and be fully conscious in whatever you’re working on. The less distracted you are, the more you will be able to accomplish.
  • Find your best time to work. Everyone has a part of the day where they get the most done in the least amount of time. Work on the most important tasks during the time of the day when you are most productive. You’ll produce better work, faster.
  • Guard yourself. Avoid distractions at all cost. Shut the door to your office, schedule a meeting with yourself or put on headphones to block out any unnecessary distractions.
  • Take a break. Give yourself a break from time to time. When you start feeling stressed or tired, get up and take a walk. Whether its to the break room or around the building, a quick walk will help clear your mind and improve your personal productivity back at your desk.
  • Work with what you have. There are only so many hours in the workday, so stop wishing you had more time. Accept the fact that there will always be something left on your to-do list at the end of the day. Go home, relax and start with that task tomorrow.
  • Quality not quantity. It may be possible to speed through your to-do list and check off every task by the end of the day, but will you come out of it with quality work? Focus on each task as it comes and congratulate yourself for completing each one.
  • Enjoy your time off. Remember to enjoy yourself on the weekend and during vacation. Time away from work is healthy and will improve your productivity when you return to the office. When you’re not there, do your best not to think about work.

There are hundreds of productivity techniques out there. Finding what works best for you may take time and experimentation. When you find what works, stick with it and keep working toward your peak productivity.
