Beyond Attendance Tracking: What’s the Next Step?

08/12/08

Sandy calls in sick on Monday morning for the fourth time in a row. You mark it in your attendance tracking system and notice the pattern…but then what? Following up on attendance problems can be a tricky proposition, but here are some tips to help you through it:

Be careful – there are a wide range of laws covering employee leave. If you’re unsure about whether you have cause to bring disciplinary action against an employee for absences, consult with your HR manager or legal staff.

Be confident – if you’ve been keeping proper documentation, you’ll be in a better position to confront employees and back up your claims.

Be consistent – your attendance policy must apply equally to all employees, or else you could find yourself on the losing end of a dispute if some employees are allowed to abuse the system. Disciplinary actions must also be consistent across the board.

The ComplyRight™ Attendance Advisor™ helps managers respond to absences legally and effectively, detailing proper responses to over a dozen attendance situations.
