The PTO Revolution:
Should You Join In?
03/05/07
It happens all the time. To avoid using a vacation day, an employee will call in “sick” at the last minute — without actually being sick. Unscheduled employee absenteeism in the U.S. workplace costs employers an average of $660 each year per employee, according to the 2005 CCH Unscheduled Absence Survey.
But many employees don’t have to make up these excuses any longer. With the emergence of paid-time off (PTO) programs, the concept of sick days, vacation days and personal days may soon be ancient history.
Power to the people
PTO eliminates the need for employees to get time off approved under a certain category of absence (e.g., “sick day”). It provides employees a specific block of time to use however they wish. Whether they want to complete a home improvement project, care for an ailing parent, or take a vacation is up to them.
Beyond giving employees a more flexible way to manage their time off, a PTO system can also provide employees with greater confidentiality. Instead of going into detail about why they need the time off (and possibly triggering certain legal obligations for the employer), employees can keep the matter private and simply draw from their PTO “bank.”
Talk about a win-win situation
Because employees can plan their time off more efficiently, a PTO system can be a huge benefit to the company. With more advance notice, the company can create a workflow that factors in the employee’s time off. Consequently, other workers feel less of a burden when covering the workload of the absent employee.
Thinking about implementing PTO at your workplace? Check with your state first — each state has its own laws on how employees must be compensated for vacation or sick time.
