What’s Their Motivation? It’s Not Just Money

As the economy picks up steam, your employees are sure to have more job options available to them. That means you should be working extra hard to recognize and motivate your employees. Employee recognition programs are proven to increase productivity, motivate employees to higher performance, reduce turnover costs and — most important — improve your bottom line.
Cash isn’t everything. (No, really!)
It’s true. To build loyalty, you’ll need to provide more than monetary compensation. Fortunately, there are plenty of low-cost ways to reward your team.
Acknowledge employees publicly.
Use a public forum, such as a staff meeting, to recognize excellent performance, and share that recognition with coworkers.
Little things mean a lot.
It’s important to call attention to such milestones as employment anniversaries and to award recognition to an “Employee of the Year.” But it’s also wise to reward employees in the short term with gift coupons, certificates or even a bagel breakfast.
Get up close and personal.
Personalize rewards to give you more bang for your motivational buck — whether it’s an award certificate, greeting card, engraved presentation clock or plaque.
Encourage peer recognition.
Implement a program where employees recognize each other. One version of this could be a “Pay It Forward” type of award in which the first employee who receives the award identifies the next employee who deserves the award.
