Unused Vacation Time More Common Among U.S. Workers
06/08/07
As a kid, you couldn’t wait for summer vacation. But as a working adult, you may not be as quick to pack your bags and get out of town.
According to a nationwide poll of approximately 2,000 workers, more than half of U.S. workers failed to use all their vacation days. And one in five said they planned to take long weekends instead of a full vacation.
The reasons for cutting back on vacation time were varied: concerns about job security, feeling like there was too much work to do, or a work environment or company that doesn’t support extended vacations. Other workers shared that their boss expects them to be accessible while they are on vacation, with 20% of employees claiming they come back to their workplace more stressed than when they left!
In spite of these vacation concerns, 78% of respondents rated their employer highly flexible in providing time off for personal matters.
What does this mean for you? As an employer, be aware that employees who don’t get away from the office are quicker to experience burnout, which can affect morale and productivity. Encourage employees to use their hard-earned vacation time and help them delegate their work so they can vacation worry-free.
